'Ākepa (Loxops coccineus) are endangered honeycreepers endemic to Hawai'i island, although O'ahu and Maui once had 'ākepa species as well. These birds are threatened by avian malaria, an often-fatal disease transmitted by the southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus).
'Ōhelo (Vaccinium spp.) are endemic Hawaiian relatives of the blueberry. They live in a wide variety of habitats, often preferring volcanic soils, and sport beautiful autumn-like colors in their foliage, flowers, and fruit.
