Hīhīwai (Neritina granosa) are stream snails endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Sometimes called freshwater 'ōpihi, these mollusks are considered Vulnerable by the IUCN. They start out as oceanic larvae, returning to the mountains after several months to live out their adult lives. Hīhīwai are considered indicator species, one that signals to the overall health of an ecosystem. The presence of hīhīwai in a stream is a good sign indeed!
