"Short-tailed Albatross

The short-tailed albatross (Phoebastria albatrus) is the largest of the North Pacific albatrosses.

These graceful birds nearly went extinct due to extensive hunting for the millinery (feather) trade in the early 1900s. Today, their numbers have increased to several thousand birds, however the fishing industry and climate change are serious risks to their survival. They are endangered in Hawai’i, where only a handful of birds can be found in Papahānaumokuākea (the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands).
