This hāhā is found on O'ahu and historically occurred on Moloka'i. Cyanea grimesiana has two subspecies, this one pictured and subsp. obatae, endemic to the Wai'anae mountain range. Cyanea grimesiana has fern-like split leaves and an overall "prehistoric" kind of a look.

The genus Cyanea is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, and is one genus of the famed lobelioid radiation.
