Kala (Naso unicornis).

Kala belong to the Acanthuridae, or surgeonfishes, which are named for the spines that grow on their caudal peduncle. Both the Hawaiian “kala” and Greek “akantha” mean thorn, in reference to these razor-sharp spines. The genus Naso is also notable for their rostral protuberance, earning them their common name unicornfishes. Kala and other members of the Acanthuridae family are common features of healthy reef ecosystems in Hawai’i.
