This critically endangered Lobelia is an O'ahu endemic, found primarily in the Ko'olau range. There are possibly under 100 specimens left, and although there was surely a Hawaiian name for this species, it is not currently known.

There are over 400 species of Lobelia, which have a nearly-global distribution. Hawaiian Lobelioids originated from a single colonization event.
