The 'ōhiki takes beach clean-ups seriously. These ghost crabs spend the night looking for all sorts of things to recycle, and play an important role as scavengers. 'Ōhiki are also indicator species, or a species whose presence or absence tells us about change and disturbance in their ecosystem. In the case of these little crabs, a lack of them where they otherwise should occur means that a beach may be seeing a lot of human activity.
