The short tailed albatross is the largest of Hawaii's albatross species. They can be found in very small numbers in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Most live on Torishima island and several other islands off the coast of Japan. These gentle beauties were killed by the millions during the feather trade--nearly driven to extinction--but have hung on and gradually increased in number from about 50 in the 1940's to several thousand today.
