Wolbachia is a non-pesticide, non-GMO, non-harmful method of suppressing the spread of avian malaria and the proliferation of the southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus). Avian malaria, a disease carried by mosquitoes, is a serious threat to our remaining honeycreeper species; some of these birds have a ~90% mortality rate when bitten by an infected mosquito.
Supporting the best means we have to suppress mosquitoes--the biggest threat to these birds--is supporting the birds themselves.
The bird featured is the ‘akiapōlā’au, who is endemic to Big Island and the last of the genus Hemignathus, in which the now-extinct nukupu'u species belonged. The second picture shows a size comparison between the mongoose/biocontrol sticker.
